Swiss museum of rural housing Ballenberg Brienz

Switzerland since the 70s, we do not demolish the old farms, stables, barns or bakeries when they make way for modern buildings. They were dismantled stone by stone before rebuilding the Swiss Museum of Ballenberg open-air.

What began in 1978 with 16 typical Swiss house is now a major exhibition comprising some 100 residential houses and commercial buildings throughout Switzerland on a plot of 66 hectares: the Swiss Museum of Ballenberg open-air. Historic buildings and their kitchens, bedrooms and living reconstituted plunge visitors into the rural life of yesteryear. Yet what makes Ballenberg a living museum are the gardens, fields, meadows and pastures arranged according to historical and more than 250 species of animals indigenous farm models. Visitors will also surprise artisans at work performing traditional tasks with period tools. Thematic exhibitions and special events related to culture and customs complete the offer.
